Nor"easter Winter Weather Still on the Rise!

New England and Atlantic Canada will be dealing with a nor'easter dropping snow and creating gusty winds today. Slippery travel and sporadic power outages could result.
An additional 1-3 inches of snow is in store for areas from northern New York through central and western Maine. Up to 6-10 inches will fall over northern New Brunswick, while parts of Newfoundland will get 3-6 inches of snow.
Even where an additional inch of snow falls, travel could become slick for a time. The gusty winds blasting the region will also contribute to some blowing snow that may reduce the visibility enough to make travel dangerous.

Mostly rain showers will dampen areas from Portland to Boston today as milder air is drawn in from the Atlantic. Snow showers will occur again in these areas during the evening and overnight hours with little to no accumulation. Any wet spots on roadways could freeze up overnight, leading to dangerous travel during the overnight hours and into Tuesday morning.
Occasional snow showers will also continue across the mountains of Pennsylvania and over western New York. No widespread accumulations are expected, but there could be a quick dusting in some communities.
Winds could gust to 40 mph across much of New England, while the potent storm spins off the coast. Trees that were weakened by the last monstrous storm could be toppled, falling into power lines in a few areas and cutting power.
By tonight, the core of the storm will be winding down over the Northeast with the exception of leftover snow showers. However, AccuWeather.com meteorologists are monitoring the potential for another snowstorm for parts of the mid-Atlantic by midweek.

When Midwest Winter Weather is Down, CPW Stays on Top!

Greetings fellow CPW Bloggers;

There’s nothing like a nice February Day with a dusting of snow to keep you itching for more snow, huh? Here in Tinley Park, IL and most of Cook County we have had very little of snow and cold temperatures, cold enough to get our spreaders out and lay down some salt. We know that some of you snow fighters in other parts of the country are really “busting tail” getting that white stuff out of the way! Lately we have noticed that many of our local customers and even some as far away as Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin and some parts of Michigan and Indiana, have been calling up with replacement parts orders. They are also calling in to upgrade their present equipment and some are even interested in completely replacing some of that equipment. It is interesting to us at CPW that this late in the season there is still a high demand for parts. We, of course, want to make sure that ALL of our CPW Customers can get the parts/equipment that they need quickly. We are still fully staffed, so please do NOT hesitate to give us a call and let us know how we can help you with any and all of your equipment needs.
Below is a map from Accuweather showing that this winter weather isn’t going to let up for a little while, whether or not that little groundhog sees his shadow!

Snow, Ice Creating Slippery Travel across Mid-Atlantic

Another round of travel-disrupting snow and ice will affect the mid-Atlantic through tonight before a stronger storm impacts the region Friday into Saturday. While ice and snow with the current storm will not be significant, people from North Carolina to southwestern New England should still be prepared for slow traffic and slippery roads into Wednesday morning. The stronger storm expected to hit the region later this week could bring more substantial snowfall to parts of the mid-Atlantic that were buried by the snowstorm last weekend….
ATTENTION: Plower"s and Spreader"s... Back Up Alarm Notice

Greetings Fellow Salt Spreader’s and Plower’s,

Well with the warmer weather arising in the Midwest, it
gives us some time to keep up with the demand and make sure our customers are
taken care of. We have come across some very important information that we like
to pass on to our customers so that they are protected as well. Below is a
article that we have come across from Department of Labor, and OSHA. Please
check this out…

OSHA Regulation - Title 29 Section 1926.601, 'Motor Vehicles'
states; No employer shall use any motor vehicle equipment having an obstructed view
to the rear unless [1] The vehicle has a reverse signal alarm audible above the
surrounding noise level or [2] The vehicle is backed up only when an observer
signals that it is safe to do so.

This requirement specifically applies to vehicles operated
within an off highway job site, not open to the public, except for vehicles
specifically addressed in section 1926.602 (Material Handling Equipment).

So it is clear in practical terms that any vehicle that operates
on a job site must have a back-up alarm fitted, the question is what alarm is
suitable for a given application, the law states "audible above the
surrounding noise" but often this is difficult to assess, especially for
vehicles that operate on various job sites. Fortunately ECCO offers solutions
that not only answers this problem but also minimizes excess noise from
overly loud alarms that are often fitted to ensure compliance.

ECCO pioneered the Smart Alarm during the 1980's and to this
day there is no more effective product for ensuring OSHA compliance. Available
in various configurations, Smart Alarms constantly measure ambient noise and
adjust their sound level to 5dB(A) above, creating a volume that is safe
without being annoying or contributing to noise pollution.

Lake Effect Snow effects most of the U.S.

New Lake-Effect Snow
4-JAN-2010 05:26am EST
The lake-effect snow machine will
continue to provide the Great Lakes with several more inches of snow today and
tonight. Additional snow will also fall on Tuesday. Moisture moving onshore in
the northwestern U.S. will lead to more mountain snow, although snow levels
will be high, some places could still receive several inches.
Cold air continues to pour over
the Great Lakes today and tonight. This will lead to more snow downwind of the
lakes. Generally the "sweet" spots will have 3-6 inches, but locally
there could be as much as 10 inches where the bands are persistent. The most
prominent regions to receive this snowfall will be the usual suspects in
northern Indiana, southwestern Michigan, the Upper Peninsula and northern lower
Michigan, northeastern Ohio, northwestern Pennsylvania, western New York and
central New York.
The snow levels in the northern
Cascades will start the day at 6,000 feet and fall to just 5,000 feet tonight.
This will stay well above the normal passes. The northern Rockies will receive
this same moisture with snow levels at or below pass level. This will lead to
as much as a new foot of snow over the Idaho Panhandle. Even the Bitterroots
will have 3-6 inches.
Tuesday will once again continue
the lake-effect snowfall with several more inches possible. Farther west, there
will be more snow through the Rockies and breaking out into the Plains. This
snow will spread through Montana and eventually the Dakotas. This snow will
arrive amid a strong storm system. This system will spread another round of
arctic air southward through the Plains on Wednesday into Thursday.

2009-2010 Winter Outlook, Make sure you are Prepared!

				Happy Summer all CPW Bloggers and Snowplowers;

We want to take the opportunity to mention a few little tid-bits
about Snow & Ice Equipment while we still have a few more weeks until that crazy
time of year that we all get excited about “Cold Winter and Snowplow Time”.
With predictions all across the board from Meteorologists all over the country,
everyone is preparing for one of the worst winters in 5 years.

				 “

Snowiest in Over 5 Years NYC to D.C.”

						 – Joe Bastardi, Accuweather

Please take a few moments to
check over your equipment that you currently have and go over the functionality
of all the equipment, make sure all the bells and whistles are working
properly, and then make a list of all the parts and accessories that you are
going to need for the upcoming season. This will make sure that you are fully
prepared and once that first snow storm hits, you won’t be stuck in the cold.
(Maybe sooner then we all predict)

This summer has been unusually cool across the Northeast, northern
Plains and parts of the West. Places like New York City and Philadelphia, which
are typically warm and humid this time of year, have had relatively cool and
wet weather instead. While no
single factor is taking responsibility for the unusually cool weather, the
combination of El Niño and worldwide volcanic activity over the past six to
nine months may have played a role in causing this trend. The El Niño is a
global atmospheric event that takes place over the equatorial tropical Pacific
Ocean. The warming of the waters in that area can result in pattern changes
globally, having a major effect on the weather across the United Sates,
especially during the winter months. In years
past, cooler summers have been followed by harsh winters. Temperatures in New
York City did not top 85 degrees in June this year. There have only been three
other times in recorded history when New York City failed to reach 85 in June.
In each of those instances, snowy winters followed. Chicago had 12 days
in June when temperatures did not exceed 70 degrees. This has happened only one
other time in 1969. That year was followed by a snowy winter as well.

A brief outlook of this upcoming 2009-2010 Winter Forecast,
provided by Accuweather’s Meterologist, Joe Bastardi

												The areas
that will be hit hardest this winter by cold, snowy weather will be from New
England through the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic, including North Carolina.
Areas from New York City to Raleigh have gotten by the past two years with very
little snowfall. This year these areas could end up with above-normal snowfall.

												While some
parts of the Appalachians did have harsh winter weather in the form of ice last
year, this winter could be one of the snowiest since 2002-03, when up to 80 inches
fell in many places. Snowfall totals this year could reach between 50 and 100
inches. Last winter, the usage of salt was way up due to the number of ice
storms. Salt supplies could be compromised again this year for state and local
road crews that battle the winter weather. On the other hand, ski resorts could
have a great year with plenty of powder for skiers.

Salt Shortage Season 2009

We’re all very busy and the Salt Season is just now approaching. Hopefully the following information will be valuable to all of our customers. As you may already have experienced this season, salt is very high priced and very low on supply. We have had numerous customers want to know where the best place to find good, inexpensive salt is and that is a hard question for us to answer. There is going to be a shortage of salt soon and we want our all of our CPW customers to be taken care of and to get all of the salt they need. We have done some research and found a few articles that may help you this 2008-2009 Salt Season.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is investigating possible collusion among suppliers, but so far she has found nothing illegal, spokeswoman Robyn Ziegler said. Dick Hanneman, president of the Salt Institute — a trade group representing U.S. and Canadian salt manufacturers — said the price increase

was caused by a "perfect storm" of factors.Record snow in parts of the U.S. last winter depleted road salt supplies, even though suppliers shipped a near-record 20.3 million tons, up from the average 16 million tons a year through the previous decade, he said. Then, fearing a repeat of the problem, many states increased their salt orders this year,

Hanneman said. Illinois, for example, asked for 34 percent more and Iowa's request spiked by 52 percent. Hanneman said the handful of salt suppliers in North America have been running full throttle

to try to meet demand. There are three mines each in Louisiana and Kansas, two a piece in Texas, Ohio and Ontario,

Canada, and one in New York, all serving states in the Great Lakes and Mississippi River regions,

he said. Most of the salt for the East Coast comes from overseas. The weather hasn't always cooperated, either. Summer flooding closed locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi River for weeks, disrupting barge shipments of road salt. Soaring U.S. gasoline prices over the summer added to the cost of transporting the salt.

The point of all of this information is that salt is in short supply and the size of orders is up by a large percentage and there might be some “hanky-panky” going on the supply side(similar to gas prices, if you remember). Some solutions are simple and some are not; keep equipment in top shape and properly adjusted, use more sand and magnesium chloride, heck with suppliers frequently for late season supplies, check with suppliers in other states or areas and/or use more brine solution. These are not all easy, but they will all help.

Salt Spreader Hydraulic Motor Price Increases

As some of you already know, the Snow & Ice Control Industry has had several price increases since we published our Central Parts Warehouse catalog back in August. The most recent increase coming from the Hydraulic Salt Spreader Motor Manufacturers. We hope to have all the new hydraulic motor pricing changed in our system and our we site by Saturday the end of November. Roughly speaking - the Hydraulic Motors have gone up about $15 to $30.The good news is - Prices seem to have stabilized across the board for Rubber and Steel products. We can only hope that this hold through the rest of the winter.Think Snow!Your CPW Snowplow Team

Notice of the Substanial Pricing Increase

Hello Fellow CPW Members, We have had a tremendous amount of calls coming in wondering "What is going on there?", regarding the recent price increase across the board on all of our Boss Snowplows, Meyer Snowplow Products, Fisher and Western Snowplows. As of September 1st, 2008 you will see a change in pricing different from last years anywhere from 3-10%. We strongly agree with all of our customers, but with inflation of gas prices and steel in our industry, this is something that every company in the industry has dealt with. Central Parts Warehouse strives on customer service and support all year round and never would want to lose a customer to price. So please dont let this increase scare you away from making decisions purchasing your new Snow & Ice Removal Equipment, just be aware that along with price increase, comes quality and service.

Fluctuating Steel Prices

This summer has been extremely frustrating for all the Snowplow manufacturers. Steel prices have been unusually violent over the last 5 months causing most Snowplow Manufactuors to wait to print their new 2008 - 2009 season pricing. The good news is Central Parts Warehouse has purchased a large amount of Snowplows as well as replacement parts on pre-season. Like everyone else in our industry, we will be forced to raise our prices during the season when we sell out of the pre-season purchases. We will keep you posted as news developes.
